How to practice scales
- Play slowly with the metronome and keep every note even before speeding up.
- Say or sing the note names as you play to connect your fingers, ears and theory.
- On guitar, learn one area of the neck at a time, then connect neighbouring shapes.
- Improvise over the chords listed under each scale to hear how the scale fits the harmony.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between major and minor scales?
The third note: a major scale has a major third (four half steps above the root) and sounds bright; a minor scale has a minor third (three half steps) and sounds darker.
Which scale should I learn first for guitar solos?
The minor pentatonic. It has only five notes, fits rock, blues and pop, and its first shape is easy to learn.
