How to use the metronome

  • Set the tempo with the slider, the plus and minus buttons, or the Tap button.
  • Choose a time signature. In eighth-note meters, the BPM number is the speed of each eighth note.
  • Tap any beat to cycle it between accented, normal and muted.
  • Turn on the speed trainer to raise the tempo automatically, for example by 5 BPM every 4 bars up to your target.
  • Add a polyrhythm layer to practice 3 against 2, 4 against 3 and other cross-rhythms.
  • Use “Share these settings” to send your exact tempo, meter and accents to a student or bandmate.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: Space to start and stop, Up and Down arrows to change tempo, T to tap.

What is a metronome, and why practice with one?

A metronome plays a steady beat at a set speed, measured in BPM (beats per minute). Practicing with one builds your sense of time, and helps you learn hard passages slowly and accurately before gradually bringing them up to speed.

Frequently asked questions

What does BPM mean?

BPM stands for beats per minute. For example, 60 BPM is one beat every second.

How does tap tempo work?

Tap the Tap button a few times along with the music. The metronome averages the time between your taps and sets the tempo to match.

Will the metronome drift if I switch tabs?

Sound is scheduled on the browser audio clock so that beats stay accurate, even when the tab is in the background. On phones, turning the screen off or switching apps may stop playback.
