How to practice note reading

  • In Random mode, choose the clef, time signature and difficulty, then press New exercise.
  • In Place notes mode, tap the staff to add a note. For more precision, slide your finger up or down before releasing.
  • Press Play to step through the notes at your chosen tempo, or use Previous and Next to move one note at a time.
  • Set note names to “After reading” so each name appears once you have passed it, and check yourself.

How can I learn to read music faster?

Start with notes inside the staff and keep the tempo low. A few minutes every day beats one long session. Once you can read without pausing, add ledger lines, then sharps and flats, and only then raise the tempo.

Frequently asked questions

Which clef should I start with?

Most higher and middle instruments, such as violin, guitar, tar and setar, are written in treble clef. For low instruments such as bass and cello, practice bass clef.

Can I practice without sound?

Yes. Turn the note sound off and only the current note is highlighted on the staff, so you can play or sing it yourself.

Is my exercise saved?

Yes. Your latest exercise is saved in this browser on this device, and comes back when you return to the page.
