Tip: link each interval to the start of a song you know, like the first two notes of “Here Comes the Bride” for a perfect fourth.

How to train your ear

  • Start with the easy set and ascending intervals. Move on when you get 9 out of 10 right.
  • Sing the interval back before answering: your voice is the fastest way to internalize it.
  • For chords, listen to the overall color first: bright (major), dark (minor), tense (diminished) or floating (augmented).
  • Practice little and often. Five minutes every day beats an hour once a week.

Frequently asked questions

What is ear training?

Ear training (aural skills) is practice in recognizing musical elements such as intervals, chords and scales just by listening. It helps you play by ear, transcribe songs, improvise and sing in tune.

Which intervals should I learn first?

The perfect fifth, perfect fourth, major third and octave are the most distinctive. Then add the minor third, major second and the sixths.
